Our Story
It all started in the late 1990s at American Management Associates Inc., where our founder Joe Langley, working in self-pay revenue cycle and collections, encountered a common yet costly problem: identifying Medicaid-eligible accounts after write-off. Seeking a solution, Joe reached out to his friend Larry Basden, who had an advanced technical degree and experience working for DHHS. Together, they developed an innovative approach that would revolutionize hospital revenue recovery across North Carolina.
What began as a side project quickly grew into RetroCheck, a trusted partner to hospitals statewide. Built on trust, expertise, and proven results, our team has helped save North Carolina hospitals hundreds of millions in recoverable bad debt through a simple process refined over time.

Drawing from his experience as COO of American Management Associates LLC, where he generated over $30M in additional revenue, Joe developed RetroCheck’s pioneering eligibility verification platform. With an M.Sc. in Cyber Security and leadership roles in both healthcare industry associations and community organizations, he brings a unique combination of technical expertise and practical healthcare financial management experience to solving hospitals’ revenue challenges.
